Santiago Palkin (ARG) and Cosima Schuleter (GER), are the current leaders in the 2017 Optimist European Championship taking place in Bourgas, Bulgaria.
Two races were completed for all fleets on the first day of racing for the 262 sailors entered in the event - 154 boys and 108 girls from 44 countries. The IODA Championship is a closed event to European countries however, there are sailors from Argentina, USA, Japan, and Hong Kong, and others who are invited to attend the event.
Racing conditions today were excellent. Winds for the first race of the day were easterly at 15 knots and increased to about 20 knots later in the day for the second race.
In the Boys fleet, Santiago Palkin, from Argentina, is the provisional leader with two first place finishes. Close behind in second place with 3 points is Can Erturk(TUK) with a first and second place finish, followed by Igor Kuczys (POL) with 3 points.
In the Girls fleet, both Cosima Schlueter (GER) and Donna Mazzueccchelli are tied for the top 2 spots with 3 points each each taking a 2nd and 1st place. The provisional third place overall is Asli Akbeniz (TUR) close behind with 5 points.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 2, is the second day of the qualifying series with two races scheduled for the boy’s Yellow, Blue and Red Fleets and the girl’s Yellow and Blue Fleets.
